From snake charmers to fire eaters and from incredible souks to camel rides through the Sahara at sunset; the wondrous winding streets of Morocco are one of our favourite sources of inspiration for interiors right now. And as the party season approaches and we prepare our homes to play host to a variety of events, we’re excited to channel far-flung destinations through our décor. Whether you opt for a jade-hued tagine, an intricate gilt lantern or a metal and glass encased candle, one thing is certain: when you dot Arabian nights-themed accents around your home it is set to become the hotspot of the season. Here we explain what typifies the look and offer inspirations on how you can channel the style in your home in an elegant and timeless way.
Archetypally Moroccan style is a gentle blend of luxury and comfort: draperies, pillows, carpets, gilt, and other objects in wrought iron. One of the loveliest results of this look is that it creates an inherently warm oriental atmosphere.
The interior floors are usually covered with thick carpet to create an intimate atmosphere. The weaving of textile pieces is considered Moroccan folk art and you will often find that the rugs are created by village women who weave or knot at the mercy of their imagination, transforming these pieces into works of art. In the Middle Ages, they were even among the favourite gifts of foreign ambassadors, and adorned the princely caravans.
Moroccan-inspired furniture is often made of exotic wood accented with copper, carved or perforated. Atlas cedar is the most used material as it responds to the technical qualities of the traditional arts. Beech, oak or iroko can also serve as an alternative.
Cushions are essential in creating an oriental atmosphere. Colourful and decorated with typical motifs, they are handmade with skins and wool fabrics that are dyed with natural products. Traditionally, they are used to make sitting down to a meal more comfortable. Turn you interior into a magical and almost far-off land by adding warmth and building on bright colours with textiles.
Symbols of Moroccan art, lanterns are a traditional part of the decoration of palaces and houses. To recreate the atmosphere of a typical home, choose oriental-style lanterns combining copper metal and coloured glass. Your home will turn into an enchanting haven by the wonderful light effects lanterns provide.
Moroccan mosaics, also called zellige, are a precision art. Made of glazed ceramic, they are found throughout the eastern decoration. The influence of the work of Moroccan ceramics has even crossed the sea as you can see these designs across the entire Mediterranean basin. In a bathroom, a kitchen, a terrace or in a room, mosaics will wake up your interiors and add special charm to any space.
Decorative accessories, such as gilt brass or authentic Moroccan pottery decorated with elegant coloured patterns, play a major role in Moroccan culture, bringing warmth and originality to any interior.
